I menat to post this before I left for vacation ... it is very nice here in Hawaii ;-) ... but could all the U8 coaches meet 15 minutes before the next game (looking at the Calgary weather and rain seems to be in the near and long term forecast) to discuss potential changes to the teams. Now that a couple of games have been played, it is obvious that a couple of teams are significantly stronger than others and some parents have asked for some changes to make it fun for everyone. I think the coaches have a pretty good idea how to modify the teams so I am leaving it up to you guys!

Hi
Is soccer on for tonite for U6 and U8? Thanks
Is it safe to assume if there is no soccer cancellation notice that soccer is on for u6 and u8?
As posted on the last cancellation notice, the field would be pretty wet and it's pretty gloomy outside. So can I assume that tonights games are cancelled for U6?
Is someone in charge of determining cancellations in Kim's absence?
Here at the field. I see coaches. No one else! @6:20
I am confused. Isn't Todd supposed to be calling the games? So the games weren't canceled by him. We showed up, but only one other person on our black team was there too (plus all the other teams except red).
I was very disappointed to hear that the U8 teams were not adjusted last night. This league is intended to be a fun and fair opportunity for kids who otherwsie don't play soccer to have a positive experience with the game, have a chance kicking the ball and gain some confidence in a physical endeavor. This intent is not achieved if a few kids playing at an advanced level are all on the same team. The simple solution would appear to be: spreading the advanced players out across the teams (it is not too late to do so) and letting each of them develop their leadership and playmaking skills on a team of their own. Please reconsider.
Respectfully, I disagree. The teams are just starting to come together and trust one another, thus it is not a good time to switch everyone now. With the exception of one team, the teams are fairly balanced, and the skills of the kids will change as the season progresses. I think it is up to the coaches to ensure that the play is #1 safe, and #2 fun for all the players. There will always be a huge range in ability at the U8 level, and mostly the kids just want to play with their friends, be active and learn a few things about soccer. I saw some changes in the play last night, directed by the coaches, that made a difference. They are doing their best, and so is Kim.
I don't believe that community soccer is meant to exclude people who "otherwise play soccer" from playing with their mates in the community. I am reliably informed that the coaches are happy to manage any mis-matches in the teams, so I think if you have a concern you should talk to your coach rather than upset other people on this blog.
As they say, "all that's missing is a conversation."
I think we just need to move ahead and support the kids as they finish out the rest of the season. However, I still do not understand the thinking that went into placing certain kids on the same team. It is a positive experience for kids to play against each other and also a positive experience for them to meet other children who don't live in the neighborhood. In any event, thanks to all the volunteers and coaches and hopefully things can be done differently next year, perhaps some type of evaluations as they do in other "hoods".
